Wendell Croaks

'The 3am Window'

Bail bondsfrog, window open till 3am

The last light on in the swamp. Wendell Croaks keeps a bondsfrog's window open till 3am, and he has bonded out both twins across the water — one who cries on the paperwork, and one who signs it like a deal memo.

Zero. This one always comes back for the next one.

Wendell met PooPee at 2:57 in the morning, three minutes before the window closed, with the paperwork already half-filled. PooPee did not cry, did not plead, did not explain. He read the bond, corrected a clause in Wendell's favor, and signed it like a deal memo. Wendell has kept the window open a little later ever since, just in case.

He has bonded out the soft brother from across the water too. That one wept on the forms and smudged the ink. Wendell files both twins in the same drawer and tells anyone who asks that only one of them has ever been worth the paper — and it is not the one who cries.

Every time PooPee is booked, Wendell is the reason he is out again by morning. Follow the rap sheet's long list of releases and you will find Wendell's signature under most of them, filed at ungodly hours, always paid, never skipped.

He says the frog who signs a confession like a deal memo never runs, because a frog like that already knows he is going to win. Wendell has never been wrong about this. He has been wrong about the other twin exactly once, which was one weepy skip too many.

I've bonded out both brothers. One cries on the paperwork. This one signs it like a deal memo. Guess which never skips.

Intel compiled from defendant testimonials and one (1) deal memo that was technically a bail bond. Croaktown P.D. assumes no responsibility for associates who have since 'gone fishing in the islands.' A work of parody.
