The Hopfather Speaks — for the record, and against his lawyer's advice

The Hopfather Speaks

The swamp doesn't remember what I did. It remembers what I said while I was doing it. Here's the whole book of it — every line I've dropped that a reporter wrote down and a prosecutor read back to me. Steal one. Say it like you mean it. That's how a swamp gets a legend. A work of parody.

  • Snitches get sewers.

The first thing every new frog on the payroll learns, and the last thing three of them ever said.

  • Yeah, I did it. What of it?

My answer to every count on the sheet. The stenographer stopped writing 'the defendant declined to comment' about halfway through.

  • I don't launder money. I give it a bath and a fresh name.

For the jury, who kept using the ugly word for a beautiful process.

  • A clean record just means you weren't ambitious yet.

Advice to a young toad who bragged he'd never been booked. He's been booked now. You're welcome.

  • I've got a relation across the water who pays his taxes on time. We don't speak.

The only apology you will ever get out of me — and it isn't one.

  • Loyalty in my swamp runs exactly one direction. Down.

Etched over the door of the storm-drain casino. Nobody's asked for a raise since.

  • I never stole a thing. I relocated it somewhere it appreciated me.

Sworn testimony, later struck from the record for being 'too smug to enter as evidence.'

  • They put a bounty on my head. So I bought the bounty. Now I hunt myself for the payout.

The WANTED poster is technically my most profitable holding. Print it. I get a cut either way.

  • My tongue is faster than your lawyer and cheaper than your judge.

Said to the judge. The judge, to his credit, laughed. To his discredit, he was already on the payroll.

  • Rules are just crimes nobody's been brave enough to commit twice.

The closest thing the swamp has to a founding document.

  • I didn't climb to the top of the pond. The pond sank down to meet me.

On the subject of 'how it all started.' The origin is messier. The line is better.

  • Everybody in Croaktown ends up with a file. The lucky ones end up in mine.

The recruitment pitch, the threat, and the compliment — all one sentence. Efficiency is a virtue down here.

Every line above was allegedly said by a frog who is not real, about crimes that did not happen, in a swamp you cannot find on a map. Quote him freely — he'd want nothing less. A work of parody.
