Croaktown P.D. — terminology, for the record
The Croaktown Dictionary
Every case file leans on words the outside world has never heard. For the record — and for the prosecutor, who kept asking — Officer Croaksworth has defined the swamp's working vocabulary of organized crime. Each term as it appears in the file, with a pointer to where PooPee allegedly did the thing.
- Tongue-print forgery noun
The act of duplicating another frog's tongue-print — the swamp's one unforgeable signature — to authorize a withdrawal, a deed, or a confession that was never made. Every frog's strike is unique down to the flick. PooPee allegedly cloned six of them and signed a casserole receipt in his brother's name on the way out.
See alsoCharge § 09.1 — Cryptographic Tongue Forgery- Pond-toll noun
An unofficial fee levied on any frog who wishes to cross, fish, or do business in a stretch of water — collected by whoever is currently strong enough to collect it. PooPee collected pond-tolls on four ponds he did not own and reported income on none of them.
See alsoCharge § 13.0 — Impersonating a Tax-Paying Frog- Shell pondcompany noun
A pond with no water in it — a company that exists only on paper, owns nothing, employs no one, and exists to move flies from one place to a cleaner place. The empire allegedly ran seventeen, each named after a cousin nobody can locate.
See alsoThe job — The Tongue-Press Shell Game- Swamp-bucks noun
The informal unit of account in the Croaktown underworld, pegged to nothing and backed by intimidation. One swamp-buck is worth roughly what the frog holding it says it is. The storm-drain casino quoted all its odds in them.
See alsoThe job — The Cattail Street Ribbit Casino- Ribbit ring noun
The underground croak-gambling circuit — where frogs bet swamp-bucks on which one can hold a note the longest. PooPee ran the biggest one in the swamp out of an unlicensed casino beneath a storm drain, with the house taking a cut of every croak.
See alsoCharge § 04.2 — Operating an Unlicensed Ribbit Casino- The float noun
The lag between a dirty fly going into the wash and a clean one coming out — the window during which the money technically belongs to no one and is therefore, in PooPee's reading, his. The longer the float, the harder the trail. His allegedly ran three swamps wide.
See alsoThe job — The Tongue-Press Shell Game- Lily-pad lockup noun
The swamp penitentiary — a ring of guarded lily-pads in the deep water where Croaktown houses its convicted. PooPee is serving three concurrent terms there and, by the warden's own account, runs the cellblock more profitably than the warden does.
See alsoThe crew — Warden Toadkins- Fly-currency noun
Actual flies, used as legal tender. The base layer of the swamp economy beneath the abstract swamp-buck — countable, edible, and therefore the only money a frog can both spend and snack on. Restitution in PooPee's case was ordered in flies and paid, so far, in IOUs.
See alsoThe crew — Big Mama Mallory, the Pond Bank- The pad that never was noun
A lily-pad investment sold to forty-one tenants that did not, and never did, exist — the swamp's flagship Ponzi structure. Rent was collected, dividends were promised, and the only thing actually constructed was the brochure.
See alsoThe job — The Forty-One-Tenant Lily-Pad- The good-twin gambit noun
Impersonating the wholesome, tax-paying twin across the water in order to walk a clean record through the swamp registry. The con works precisely because nobody downstream can believe PooPee would lower himself to act respectable. He has never confirmed running it. He has never had to.
See alsoThe job — The Registry Con- Property-room shrinkage noun
The quiet, recurring tendency of logged evidence to 'walk off' from the Croaktown P.D. property room between intake and trial. Three (3) exhibits in the PooPee case are currently classified as shrinkage. The officer on the desk has no comment and a new watch.
See alsoThe crew — Officer Croaksworth, property room- Gone fishing in the islands idiom
What the file says about any associate who has abruptly left town with a quantity of flies that does not reconcile. Nobody has ever seen the islands. Nobody fishes. The phrase is understood by all parties to mean the frog is not coming back and the books will not be balanced.
See alsoThe crew — Croaktown's known associates- Casserole diplomacy noun
The swamp practice of settling a grievance by covered dish — leaving a tuna casserole in a rival's lobby as a gesture that reads as either a peace offering or a threat, depending on whether you owe the frog who sent it. PooPee has never confirmed sending one across the water. The dish was returned uneaten, which in Croaktown is an escalation.
See alsoThe feud — The Casserole in the Lobby- The islands run noun
The final leg of a laundered fly's journey — the trip down the dotted line to the offshore haven where the take retires and the books stop asking questions. No frog on record has made the run and come back to describe it, which the file treats as a feature rather than a gap.
See alsoThe islands — where the take retires- Early parole noun
The unofficial arrangement by which a convicted frog's three concurrent terms quietly become a suggestion — sentence shortened, gate left ajar, paperwork lost in the reeds — in exchange for a cut the warden files under 'miscellaneous.' Named for the alias the warden himself now answers to.
See alsoThe crew — Warden Toadkins, 'Early Parole'- The 3am window noun
The single unwatched hour of the night shift when a cell door is inexplicably ajar, a camera is inexplicably looping, and a guard is inexplicably on his break. The swamp does not believe in coincidences this precise. Neither does the incident log.
See alsoThe crew — Wendell Croaks, 'The 3am Window'- Victim impact statement noun
In Croaktown, a formal complaint filed by one of PooPee's marks that, read aloud in court, sounds less like an accusation and more like an advertisement. The complaints desk has learned to redact the parts where the victim admits they'd hire him again.
See alsoThe Rogues' Gallery — the marks tell it from their side- The Holdings noun
The collective name for PooPee's seventeen shell pondcompanies — a paper empire that owns no water, employs no frogs, and generates income the Registry cannot explain. Each holding exists to make the one beneath it look legitimate. Stop counting them; the seventeenth was invented to audit the sixteenth.
See alsoThe Holdings — the empire on paper- Cellblock economy noun
The internal fly-market a convicted frog runs from inside the lily-pad lockup — commissary futures, protection tariffs, and a lending desk that clears more flies than the prison's own budget. By the warden's account, PooPee's cellblock economy is the most solvent institution in the deep water.
See alsoCellblock Dispatch — the ongoing incident archive- Croaking-and-driving noun
Operating a lily-pad while croak-impaired — piloting one's pad across open water at a volume and heading no sober frog would attempt. PooPee was cited once, contested the reading, and argued the pad was parked and the swamp was moving. The court is still deliberating.
See alsoCharge § 02.7 — Aggravated Croaking-and-Driving- Fly consumption noun
The act of silencing a witness by eating the single fly whose testimony would have sunk the case — the swamp's most literal form of evidence tampering, and the hardest to prove, because the evidence is by definition digested. The prosecutor called it obstruction. PooPee called it lunch.
See alsoCharge § 11.6 — Witness Tampering (Fly Consumption)- Sewer-grate twelve noun
The rusted iron grate the swamp maps number twelve, under which a nobody tadpole hatched, decided the swamp was mispriced, and swam back up the pipe to collect the difference. Ground zero of the whole empire. Nobody bet on the frog who came out of it. Everybody paid him eventually.
See alsoThe origin — the whole scar story- Page-One frog noun
A frog guaranteed a slot on the front page of the Croaktown Gazette every week without ever writing in, buying an ad, or granting an interview — the press cricket's standing favorite. Costs nothing and can't be bought, which is exactly why the frog across the water can't get one.
See alsoThe crew — Jiminy Pressley, 'The Headline'- Estate sale noun
A public auction at which goods that fell off the back of a riverboat are reintroduced to the swamp economy as the tasteful liquidation of a late frog's estate — provenance supplied, questions discouraged, gavel loud enough to end the questions. The 'estate' is rarely late and rarely a frog.
