The Good Twin Gambit

The rap sheet lists § 13.0 as 'Impersonating a Tax-Paying Frog.' It was bolder than that: after the laundromat fell apart, PooPee didn't flee the marsh — he tried to become the one frog in it nobody would ever suspect.

The hub file has the punchline. This is the setup that earned it — why a clean name is the richest thing in the swamp, how a weeping clerk waved the whole thing through, and the exact flourish of the pen that no dependable frog has ever, in recorded history, committed. The Swamp P.D. files this one under 'audacity.'

  1. The Registry Con

    a.k.a. “The Good Twin Gambit”

Take: one spotless reputation, briefly, and every pond-toll refund attached to it

    The Setup

After the tongue-press ring collapsed and half the marsh was looking for him, PooPee did the last thing anyone expected: nothing dramatic. He didn't run for the islands. He walked into the Croaktown registry in broad daylight, in a pressed collar, and filed paperwork claiming to be the responsible twin — the dependable one, the one who never skips a pond-toll, the one the whole marsh quietly trusts to do the right and boring thing. His reasoning was elegant and entirely his own: if you cannot beat your blameless brother's reputation, and you have tried, then you simply put on his name and wear it to the bank. The forgery wasn't a document this time. It was a whole identity, worn like a borrowed coat.

    The Take

A clean name unlocks clean money, and clean money moves without anyone watching. Under his brother's spotless filing history, PooPee redirected every pond-toll refund, every good-citizen rebate, every early-payment credit the registry owed the marsh's most reliable frog — all of it flowing legally, in broad daylight, into accounts only PooPee could reach. He even collected a civic award: a small bronze fly, presented at a luncheon, for 'Exemplary Contribution to Orderly Pond Governance.' Wendell Croaks, the registry's own dependable clerk, personally processed the paperwork, dabbing his eyes the whole time. Nothing was stolen in the ordinary sense. It was all simply owed — to a frog who would never in a thousand years think to check whether he'd received it.

    How It Nearly Worked

It nearly worked because nobody, anywhere, audits the frog who pays early. The registry clerk took one look at that impeccable filing history — every toll paid ahead of time, every form neat, every signature apologetic — and waved the whole thing through, weeping a little at how nice it was to meet such a dependable young frog for once, in a marsh so full of the other kind. Suspicion needs a reason, and a perfect record is the one thing in Croaktown that has never once given anybody one. The gambit's genius was that it hid not in the shadows but in the last place any investigator thinks to look: directly behind the reputation of a genuinely good frog.

The Line That Got Him Caught

They asked him to sign the civic-pride ledger at the luncheon. The real twin signs everything the same way — full name, neat, unhurried, faintly apologetic cursive, the hand of a frog who assumes he owes the paper something. PooPee took the pen, leaned back, lit a cigar indoors under a 'No Smoking' reed-sign, blew one perfect ring at the chandelier, and wrote 'put me down for the whole marsh.' The room went quiet. No honest frog has ever, in the entire recorded history of Croaktown, asked to be put down for the whole marsh. Wendell Croaks stopped weeping, looked at the signature, and understood at last exactly which twin he had spent the afternoon admiring.

DispositionGUILTY — § 13.0, Impersonating a Tax-Paying Frog. The clerk wept a second time, differently. Subject then expensed the tissues to a shell pondcompany that no longer exists.
